يقول المهندس في «الله والشاعر»: -

وهذه الأعين نهب العفاء ... في رقدة الموت كأن لم تنم

محدقات في نواحي السماء ... تشهدها هذا الأسى والألم

وهذه الأيدي تحوط الصدور ... كأنها في موقف للصلاة

لم تنس في نزع الحياة الغرور ... ضراعة ترسمها للإله

ها هنا شيء من ملاح كلردج وأشباحه.

أشباح كلردج سباع شرسات، وأعين المهندس التي يذكرهن وينعتهن محدقات ها هنا، إنما هن أعين سنانير أوالف، أدركهن ما يدرك سنانير الدور من هذا الموت- خذ مثلاً قول كلردج: (الفصل الرابع) (?):

I fear thee ancient mariner!

I fear thy skinny hand!

صلى الله عليه وسلمnd thou art long, and lank and brown,

صلى الله عليه وسلمs is the ribbed sea - sand.

I fear thee and thy glittering eye,

صلى الله عليه وسلمnd thy skinny hand so brown.

Fear not fear not thou wedding guest

This body dropt not down.

صلى الله عليه وسلمlone, alone, all, all alone,

صلى الله عليه وسلمlone on a wide wide sea!

صلى الله عليه وسلمnd never a saint took pity on

My soul in agony.

The many men so beautiful

صلى الله عليه وسلمnd they all dead did lie,

صلى الله عليه وسلمnd a thousand thousand slimy things

Lived on and so did I.

I looked upon the rotting sea,

صلى الله عليه وسلمnd drew my eyes away;

I looked upon the rotting deck,

صلى الله عليه وسلمnd there the dead men lay,
